End of Year Assembly

We celebrated this year of leadership for the 5th graders at our end of year assembly. CLAYMO memories were shared from kindergarten through 4th grade students. Three 5th grade leaders reflected on how they have grown this year and lessons they will carry with them as they move on to Wydown.
Finally, we honored those teachers and students who are moving on from Clayton. It was a really nice way to wrap up this school year as a community.

Daily Blog

Hello everyone! And welcome to the daily blog!

Spanish: Playing mastermind! And also, we're gonna have a celbration next spanish! (Tomorrow).

PE: Flashback Friday! We played something we haven't played in forever! Air Raid! In this game you set down a bowling pin anywhere in the gym and we'd retrieve beanbags to knock others pins down! It was great!

Math: The first thing after specials was, of course, math. I was gone half the time to do something important, so, I'm pretty sure all we did was do more stuff with triangles.

Reading: Looking up stuff on the internet for our book, for example, me and our group researched greek mythology, about the gods of course. It really helped us because our book, (which you might be familiar with),  was Percy Jackson. Because it was mainly about greek gods!

Social Studies: Today in social studies, we researched a colony to research and share with the class, in the form of a skit, modo, jingle, etc.! After that we did a settling round! And almost the whole time, we had a sub! Shoutout to Ms. Ebling.

Field Trip: On this field trip we went to wydown and took a school tour! It was very interesting indeed.

Social Studies (again): When we got back, the first thing we did was, enter the building of course. Though the second thing we did was social studies. We had this for a short time but in that time we did trading!

Reading: Right after social studies, we did the planner and then IDR. After that we cleaned up and left!

That's gonna be the end of this blog! I hope you have a Spectacular weekend!

Daily Blog

Hello and welcome to the daily blog!

STEM day field trip: So today is STEM day which stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. So to celebrate today, the whole firth grade of Meremac, Captin, and our school, Glenridge, went to Clayton high school to do various things at various stations. Things that basically had to do with, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. For example, one station, people showed us a huge robot that can shoot hoops with large grey balls. Another station, people let us build paper airplanes that we had to get through hoops in order to get candy. It was, in all, pretty fun! Boring for some but not for everyone! One of the most distrusting things we did was pick up a sheep heart and poke at it, of course, with gloves on. We had lunch outside on grass in the middle of the day. Finally it was time to leave at about 2:20 and we got on the bus and left.

Worlds Fair: As soon as we got back, our teacher, Mrs. Scotino, told us today was also Worlds Fair! Excited, we took our note cards and pencil down to various 3rd graders to give us info on their country to write down. It was so fun to see all of their work and how hard they worked on it. We also had a mini challenge of whoever got the most facts/info, would get candy. We get candy at the end of the day so I'm praying that I get some!

Thank you for reading and letting me fill you in on what we did today! I hope you have a extraordinary weekend! Bye!

Author, Jody Feldman, Visits

Author of The Gollywhopper Games, Jody Feldman, visited Glenridge today to share her journey to becoming a writer. She shared a few tips for how to use the world around us to help collect story ideas. She shared her process for developing characters that anyone can use when imagining characters for their own story. We got to see a picture and hear stories about the amount of times she wrote and rewrote The Gollywhopper Games before it was officially published. We loved learning from this author and can't wait to try some new techniques in our own writing!

Understanding Concentration

The scientists of 5S created solutions with various amounts of solute and solvent to compare mass and explore the ideas of a concentrated solution and a diluted solution. They used kolaid solutions and a taste test to compare concentrations of solutions and they mixed salt solutions to compare how mass is different based on the concentration of solutions.

Creating and Separating Mixtures

We began our first investigation of our chemistry unit this week. Our focus was on how can we make a mixture and how can we separate the components of a mixture. We used the substances earth material, powder, and kosher salt to observe what happens when we add water to create a mixture. Then we developed strategies for separating the substances from the water. We had to use a screen to separate the earth material from the water. We used a coffee filter to separate the powder from the water. Finally, we set out the salt and water mixture to allow the water to evaporate over the weekend in order to separate the water from the salt.

Kicking Off Our Make a Change Project

Two of our 5th graders reminded us of one part of our CLAYMO promise - "we promise to take care of many others." We had a visitor from The Shoeman Water Project to re-emphasize the need in our world for clean water and shoes. Starting tomorrow we will kick-off our fundraiser. We thank our community in advance for all of the support you will provide!!
