Spring has Sprung!

To celebrate the changing of seasons, we spent some time with our kindergarten buddies looking for signs in nature that tell us Spring is here.

Author, Jody Feldman, Visits

Author of The Gollywhopper Games, Jody Feldman, visited Glenridge today to share her journey to becoming a writer. She shared a few tips for how to use the world around us to help collect story ideas. She shared her process for developing characters that anyone can use when imagining characters for their own story. We got to see a picture and hear stories about the amount of times she wrote and rewrote The Gollywhopper Games before it was officially published. We loved learning from this author and can't wait to try some new techniques in our own writing!

Understanding Concentration

The scientists of 5S created solutions with various amounts of solute and solvent to compare mass and explore the ideas of a concentrated solution and a diluted solution. They used kolaid solutions and a taste test to compare concentrations of solutions and they mixed salt solutions to compare how mass is different based on the concentration of solutions.

Solute, Solvent, and Solution

During science today, our investigation focused on answering the question: "how does dissolved solute affect mass and volume of a solvent?"

Creating and Separating Mixtures

We began our first investigation of our chemistry unit this week. Our focus was on how can we make a mixture and how can we separate the components of a mixture. We used the substances earth material, powder, and kosher salt to observe what happens when we add water to create a mixture. Then we developed strategies for separating the substances from the water. We had to use a screen to separate the earth material from the water. We used a coffee filter to separate the powder from the water. Finally, we set out the salt and water mixture to allow the water to evaporate over the weekend in order to separate the water from the salt.

Kicking Off Our Make a Change Project

Two of our 5th graders reminded us of one part of our CLAYMO promise - "we promise to take care of many others." We had a visitor from The Shoeman Water Project to re-emphasize the need in our world for clean water and shoes. Starting tomorrow we will kick-off our fundraiser. We thank our community in advance for all of the support you will provide!!

The Planeterium Field Trip: By Violet Pup AkA Isabella Bamnolkar

`       The Planeterium Field Trip9
By Your Earth Rover Reporter Isabella B

On Feburary 29, 2016 on Monday we landed at our mysterious but AWESOME, James S McDonnel Planeterium.A small 20 minute drive for kid , but amazing adventrue for kidkind! We split up and got to go see in the science center 2 BIG exibits. The Mars Rover was so cool.Fun fact, the most recent trip to Mars for a robot was in 2012.Me and my freinds Devon and Iris(DII) got to program a robot to pick up samples on fake Mars and got to experiment with how parts of the robot function and work. The Makerspace was my favorite. I spent some time making a sail to race and making a parachute and seeing if it would go through a BIG tube.I also experimented with magnets. And then we began a little stroll down to some other things. On the way I saw vintage Astronaut Barbie, and lots of model planes. Then we arrived at our destanation.First I looked at another Mars exibit.I used a mirror thing to discover rocks, and also looked at gases and how powerful they are. Then here is the coolest part of my whole experience.I saw a little rover and it could be programmed by boys and girls. It moved and jiggled and wiggled. It WAS SOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!!I also moved on to see the rocket ships Gemini and Mercury. And also saw a cool video about the Moon.It interviwed people who worked to reach there dream of landing on it. We went into the stairs.Every moment of a bite of exitement hit me like a bolt of thunder. We entered the dome.It was magical, Like a step onto clear warm water in the Bahamas.I tried to stop thinking if I was dreaming.I felt like heaven.Like biting into marshmallowsI was not in La La Land ! So I began looking at all the exibits. One was about how they eat.In packets! Then I saw it from the balcony. It was all a blur when I was walking to the balcony and then It was so cool! When I got there It was so cool!!!!!Then we got out our mats and sat down. Then the show began. Our guide Ana showed us the night sky and showed us all the constellations.Ursa Major is my personal fave.We also had a story about Orion. Then the field trip ended with us checking out the muesam and boarding the bus. First  a couple pics and then off we went.

The Planetarium/Science Center Field Trip

Yesterday, our class went on a field trip to the Planetarium. The place was huge! There was a big bridge with glass walls and filled with multiple cool things. There were many little mini games for us to do such as, simulating a planes flight, training for astronauts, and a big workshop! We also had to write down at least five questions on some notecards. I thought the show at the end was amazing! What I mean by that is that when we went into the Planetarium and there were more things to do, later we gathered into the center where this big globe above us was and grabbed mats to lay on and look up at "the sky." We heard this girl talking about facts and asking us questions, later the sky lit up with stars and the Milky Way! Then looking for constellations took up most of the show. We then left and took a picture in front of a model plane/statue. After that we ran into the bus and were going back to school. We arrived just in time for recess. And I honestly thought that the place was amazing!

Thanks for Reading!!!

PEACE OUT!
