We started by reading the story, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, and brainstorming the problems the main character, Peter, faces throughout the story. Some of the problems we noticed were, too much snow that covered doorways, Peter sunk into the snow as he was walking, he slipped down into the water of the bathtub, and the older boys in the neighborhood. The 5th graders and the kindergarteners created models of machines to clean up the snow, models of boots that Peter wouldn't sink in the snow, models of hover boots so he wouldn't even need to touch the snow, models of snowball making machines, models of time machines so he could get old enough to play with the older boys, and so much more! It was a great way to spend the afternoon - problem solving, designing, and creating with our buddies!
